Removing lacquer residue

I have an 1847 Crown in fairly decent shape, but it
appears to have what looks like some residue of lacquer around the
toothed border area.
I would like to know if anyone has any tips or tricks or knows what
solution etc. for removing the lacquer without the use of a wire brush ...

1870 Penny Date varieties

Hi Folk,
I have an 1870 Penny that appears to have unusually thin
numerals.
Freemans F60 does not give any variations on the date numerals,
however Ebay Item number: 370075831290 shows an 1870 wide date for
sale from somebody far more knowledgeable than myself.
