My first turtle dove

Just spotted in a friends garden in Holbeach Links. Only noticed it
apart from the normal collared doves we have as it is much smaller and
the wing markings actually do look like a turtle markings. Crazy but
great to see. ...

OT - Sacred Ibis in France

Just back from short holiday in SW Brittany. The Grande Bri¨¨re marshes
and salt pans, near Gu¨¦rande, on the N of the Loire estuary were good
for birds. Lots of Marsh Harriers over the Grande Bri¨¨re and Spoonbills
on the Gu¨¦rande saltpans.
Was very surprised to see Sacred Ibis paddling around the Gu¨¦rande
saltpa ...

I was pruning a slightly neglected bay tree this afternoon when I heard
a rustle and saw something move from a branch about 50cm from my head.
My first coherent thought was "collared dove" (frequent visitors to my
garden), but as I followed the blur it was plainly too big and I thought
"woodpigeon" (even more ...

I read an article recently that suggests that they eat bats. Is this true?
Might have been on the daily mail website, can't remember exactly where I
saw it but it was in the last few days.
Seems ridiculous - surely not, what do you think?

Sparrow hawk

We just witnessed an attack on our bird-table by what appeared to be an
immature, male. It grabbed a greenfinch and flew down to the lawn where it
stomped it. It then flew off to enjoy it in peace!

Eagle in England...?

Thanks to copious feeding, we get a lot of wild birds in our garden
just outside Buckingham (UK). These, in turn, ensure we get daily
visits from hawks, buzzards and red kites who are also looking for an
easy meal.
But today, the missus and I saw the largest raptor we have ever seen!

Seen swimming on Marden Quarry, Tyneside. Two large ducks - greenish-yellow
bills. Male(?) all black with white breast - Female(?) mottled gray with
broken-white breast.

A MAN from County Durham appeared in court yesterday charged in
connection with the smuggling of endangered and exotic bird eggs in
and out of the country.
