Disturbed nest
Tue, 31 Mar 2009 14:40:12 +0100
I've just been cutting down a Laural tree in our garden and suddenly
realised, to my dismay, that I had exposed a nest. I can't look into it, but
I managed to take a couple of indistinct pictures from above by holding the
camera up and there are three eggs inside which appear to be blue and
speckled. Judging b ...

Mon, 30 Mar 2009 02:13:05 -0700 (PDT)
Well Spring is definitely here again. The Yellow Hammers heralded it
two weeks back , well supported by the first Field Fares. The usual
finches are here and the last being as usual the Green Finches and
Siskins. A Hoopoe was in the village this week as were the marsh
Tits.
The dramatic arrival of the Wood Pig ...

Recycling Vegetable Oil
Thu, 26 Mar 2009 08:39:02 -0700 (PDT)
After being told off for pouring my cooking oil into the oil bank at
my local recycling centre (well, it's oil!), I had a look to see what
other options there are for disposal.
http://www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/home/environment/recycling/factsheets/oil.htm
mentions making bird cakes. Not sure about a runny cake ...

Bird song tracking - OT slightly as USA but...
Fri, 20 Mar 2009 14:07:29 -0700 (PDT)
With an old computer and 30 dollars worth of off-the-shelf components,
you can outfit yourself with the cutting edge in bird monitoring
technology and make an important contribution to science.
For years, birdwatchers have counted birds by sight during the
daytime. The night ? when most migratory birds travel ? ...

mandarin mallard cross??
Tue, 17 Mar 2009 16:03:12 -0000
just been out with dog down the Stratford canal. This my local patch and I
walk it a few times a week. Amongst the usual mallards was a male mandarin
acting with aggression towards any males and coveting a female. They got up
the bank and she settled down in the grass. He followed and starting
preening her. A ...

Robins nest
Sat, 14 Mar 2009 15:13:49 -0000
I've noticed today that a pair of Robins are building a nest somewhere
inside my garden shed via a broken window. When am I likely to be able to
go into the shed again without disturbing them? Also, the hole is quite big
and cats come into my garden - if I try to make it smaller will they still
find a way in ...
