First time Tropical Setup

Hi i have a 3' x 1' x 1' aquarium which is currently housing coldwater
goldfish however i am ready for the next step and having found new
homes for my goldfish i wish to refurbish my aquarium into a tropical
aquarium.
I am first and formost looking for a bigger/better filter for the tank

as header its in good health about 2 years since I brought it, possibly
a female around 4" long its just getting to big for all her tank mates
mostly live bearers and eating all the babies
I would quite happily swap it for a few swordtail's or mollies or any
other live bearers

In the last week this white fungus has developed on my bogwood and in a
couple of other places,

I have a 125L tank, 9 months old, and I change around 35-40L a week.
Readings are
Nitrate - somewhere between 25 and 50mg/l
Nitrite - less than 1 mg
