Online maps!     30 May 2008 13:57:44 GMT
I thought "Ah! I can check how big a river is and whether the bridges marked on the OS map still exist." How wrong I was :-( The resolution available for northern Scotland is dire, in both Google and Multimap, though Google allows me to zoom in beyond the resolution it has. Regards, Nick Maclaren. ...

Don't know if any of you noticed, but google launched g earth like browser functionality yesterday. I've just finished make all the walks on our site surfable using this new technology. I've thought of loads that can be done with this - we're really going to try to run with it. If anyone is keen to have a loo ...

Campsites in Scotland, some ramblings     Thu, 29 May 2008 19:43:58 GMT
Hi all, We've had a wonderful month of May in Scotland, and I've managed to get out onto the hills a few times this month. Some have entailed camping at recognised sites, and I just thought I'd share my thoughts. We've stayed at the Auchnahillin site at Daviot. We think this has been taken over recently and t ...

Amble from Amberley along the South Downs     Thu, 29 May 2008 17:33:22 +0100
Well, seeing as I had to visit that great outdoor boot shop Peglers at Arundel today, thought it would be silly not to take advantage of a walk on the South Downs east of Amberley. Great area to walk. So, as Clare headed west to work, I headed east to Amberley ................. great this retirement! Arri ...

of maps and bus stops     Thu, 29 May 2008 09:16:32 +0100
Just looking at Google Maps and Multimap. Google satellite view shows cars near my house that were sold at least 2 years ago. MM shows a car that was bought 3 months ago, so MM is much mor recent. The satellite view is clearer than GM but not so close. Now bus stops: GM shows 4 pairs in my village. Two pairs ...

Ping Peter Clinch re sandals     Wed, 28 May 2008 22:46:17 +0100
Hi Peter, I'm looking to replace my sandals. I looked at the Teva Terra F1s but I thought the sole is not a very deep tread - have you heard anything about the Karrimor Kiwi? The sole looks much deeper and grippier than the Teva.... Ta! ...

More cheapo gear     Wed, 28 May 2008 11:13:27 -0700 (PDT)
My local Lidl is selling off cheap two person tents, bit of an odd design, small dome with long, low extension for the feet. reduced to 19.99. Not really the job for a solo backpacker, but I would give one a go for two people walking and camping together. Netto has some cheap trangia clones, by no means the lig ...
