Rod Problem Advice needed

I have a cpl of expensive rods that i brought from ebay. They are both brand
new 2 piece 13ft beachcasters. I cant seem to get the rods to sit right when
i connect them, i end up with a clear 1 inch gap and am unable to push the
rod down any further for fear of it getting stuck. They are clearly supposed

as im down that way. Can anyone suggest bait and species available.
Is it worth bringing a spinning rod aswell as a beachcaster?

I'm sailor and not really a fisherman. Some years ago I was with a
bloke on a Yacht, he had a bit of wood about 9 inches by 3 inches that
he towed behind the boat. The wood was rigged so that it was held below
the surface untill a fish grabbed it, this caused it to trip and then
