a really stupid question

OK lads, now a real stupid question.
When you buy a new rod with a part, or whole, cork butt section do you
remove the plastic covering that is so nicely and tightly shrink wrapped on
it. I have two new rods and the plastic is so tight and neat I have left it
on but assume it should be removed really.

Well, I have seen bream do it, roach do it, salmon and trout do it, even
dolphins do it, but today I was amazed to watch no less than 3 carp
simultaneously 'tail walk' within a meter or so of each other. have they
suddenly learnt the art of ballet? and to top it off I only caught perch,
roach, and a small mirr ...

Anyone got any idea on making your own pike traces. It seems it is all out
there to buy but has anyone done it and can they let me know the basic costs
( I can not browse my local angling store so you get in a position where you
