Diesel mpg

Question: does anyone ever consistently achieve the claimed mpg figures for
a diesel-engined car? With my five previous petrol-engined cars I recorded,
on average, fuel consumption around 7% less than the official
combined figure. This was using brim-to-brim measurements and mileages, not
the trip computer.

Can anyone recommend other routes from the Chester area to Sheffield
avoiding the Snake Pass? My wife will be doing the run fairly regular
now and isn't too keen on the views offered by the Snake
Pass...'specially with the winter months fast approaching!
