Unintended consequences
Thu, 19 Nov 2009 11:00:35 +0000
Since IIRC 2006 it has been illegal to discriminate, directly or
indirectly, on the grounds of age, in the recruitment process.
Because of changing government policies, and arguably "grade inflation"
the proportion of each age cohort with degrees has steadily risen.
It appears, from my understanding of the law ...

Can a household's private sewerage outlet be legally capped?
Thu, 19 Nov 2009 10:00:22 +0000
At last night's meeting of the resident's association on this small
estate with its own private sewage treatment plant, one method was
discussed for forcing recalcitrant late-payers to pay their annual
dues on time by having their sewerage system capped. I was astounded
that such a suggestion had even been put for ...

When is a parcel delivered?
Thu, 19 Nov 2009 08:25:16 +0000
An interesting situation is developing and I'd be grateful for some
advice...
Person A (let's call him John Paul-George) buys a reasonably expensive item
by mail order, to be delivered by courier, to Person B, who is going to set
it up for them. Parcel doesn't arrive, but the courier company claims it
was ...

bad airport design & liability for damage
Tue, 17 Nov 2009 15:50:06 +0000
Suppose an airport deliberately lays its arrival area out so that
you have to weave through a perfume/booze shop after collecting
your suitcases. If you have a trolley full of luggage and
accidentally collide with some of the precarious displays of
goods, are you liable, or is the airport or shop "contributory"

can the police get this man's name?
Tue, 17 Nov 2009 14:20:05 +0000
I?d appreciate some advice here.
For three years now, I?ve been harassed by yobs on my estate. I?ve
been to the police countless times, and mostly I?ve been pretty
disgusted at their lack of action and often, their contamptuous
attitude ? frankly, I think that because I?m not a middle-class
professional, and I ...

putting coloured tape on passports
Tue, 17 Nov 2009 10:50:09 +0000
I'd like to colour-code my family's passports to make it easier
to sort them out quickly (since they all look the same on the
outside). Would it be illegal to stick electrical tape on the
outside covers?
thanks
