Flat battery and booster battery problem

I'm in the UK. Car is 1.3 litre.
QUESTION (1) I know this may not be the best way of doing it but, in
theory, if a car battery got flattened by leaving the headlights on
then why would a fully charged second battery attached in parallel
to the flat battery give almost no help at all?

The other day I went from Kent to Bristol on normal 95 ron Esso and when i
got there I refilled the tank on my 2.0ltr Nissan Primera and it worked out
at 36 mpg. When I refilled it was with BP again 95 ron and on my return home
and refilling again my mpg worked out at 42 mpg. The up and down journeys
