two flowed columns?

I'm using CSS to style a page. The page has a heading block, two columns,
and a footer.
Here's the css for the two columns:

To my surprise, Internet Explorer fails to understand <q>.
And since it also doesn't understand :before and :after, I can't even
get it to display quotes by adding a bit of CSS!
How rubbish is that?

using the google page translator I can not sign in to my site

It seems that when my page is translated using the google translator,
I can no longer sign into my site using the same login name and
password I would use normally. Is there a reason for this, or am I
just missing something silly.

Stop IE wrongly extending elements containing floated elements
