bbc 4 aspect ratio screw up
Wed, 23 Jan 2008 23:32:19 -0000
watching the 1982 top of the pops xmas special on bbc 4 tonight (!) i saw
the following....
obviously a show of such vintage was 4:3, and they were broadcasting it 4:3
except.....
what appears to have happened is the 4:3 image had been stretched to 16:9
and then cropped to 4:3 - resulting in image loss and ev ...

Oneword on DAB
Tue, 22 Jan 2008 23:55:53 +0000
Oneword-as-was (now birdsong) is active only between 6am and midnight.
If you do a station scan on your DAB receiver between midnight and 6am,
you will not see it.
So, the obvious question is: what uses that capacity overnight? Perhaps
the mighty Steve "DAB is etc. etc." can tell us.

LCNs on SEB/IDTs?
Tue, 22 Jan 2008 01:14:13 -0000
Most DTTV set-top boxes, and I presume integrated TVs, know about and use
the logical channel numbers - so that, for example, BBC News 24 is on
channel 80 (currently).
However, I have seen one STB, and was most surprised to find the same in a
(cheap) IDTV (fortunately not one I'd bought!), which allocate chan ...

Well, they've always allowed brassieres. Or is it braziers? Which is the
one that old men warm their hands on through the night?

CRAP CH4 camera work
Fri, 18 Jan 2008 21:08:12 -0000
I sat down to watch Gordon Ramsey on Channel 4 only to have it ruined by the
very poor camera work. Whoever is operating the cameras are moving them
quickly left and right, then up and down, then zooming in and out, giving
out of focus shots and generally making a complete mess of it. God knows
how anyone wo ...

BBC Helicopter at Heathrow
Thu, 17 Jan 2008 17:19:09 -0000
How do they get the pictures back from the BBC helicopter? It was sending
back live pictures from the Heathrow incident this afternoon. Is it a flying
satellite truck? Does it need an expensive gyro stabilised dish? Or is this
one of the few remaining uses for ground based links receiving sites?
