The best beyond the first-class realm
Tue, 15 Jul 2008 02:31:36 +0200
My recent post on Frank Roro achieved something that only the most
trivial of information can: it got me thinking. Given the eleven-naming
scourge with which this group has for the last few months been
suffering, and the openness to quirky variants of the likes of Andy and
John Hall, might it not be fun to ch ...

Idle musing -- tactics at Lords
Mon, 14 Jul 2008 15:15:49 +0100
Just for argument's sake, let's say SA collapses and loses wickets
No. 4 through 9 in the next hour's play.
How many runs do people figure they'd need to be ahead before it
would be wise to declare -- that is, blocking the possiblity of being
bowled out, but knowing that England wouldn't have enough time to

BBC comment

Raised a smile, this did (from the BBC web commentary):
"McKenzie has now faced 428 balls for his 131. On the radio version
of TMS, Boycott is drooling like a happy toddler."

The repeating wicket keeper curse!
Mon, 14 Jul 2008 09:32:59 +0100
The pattern is becoming all too familiar. We are looking for a batsman
wicketkeeper. On debut they usually bat well. After a while the batting
starts to go followed by the glove work (e.g Ambrose's appalling drop
yesterday). Mustard now looks hard done by from a 20/20 and ODI perspective.
With Flintoff probabl ...

I think Hoggy's Test career is over
Sat, 12 Jul 2008 22:24:10 +0100
Can anyone think of a reason to select Matthew Hoggard for another
Test?
From the first time Jimmy Anderson appeared, it was pretty obvious
that it was written that he would one day replace Hoggard. Anderson is
now a better bowler than Hoggy when things go right, and in the last
few games he's shown himself to ...

Things you thought you would never see 1, 2, 3...

[to the tune of Ian Dury - Reasons To Be Cheerful (part 3)]
1) Bell getting 199 - very pretty, flies to 60, get bogged down then
throws his wicket away, that is how it usually goes...
2) SA showing absolutely no fight at all in the field, sounded like a
graveyard out there (and terrible captaincy by Smith - wo ...

All time Sri Lanka XI
Sat, 12 Jul 2008 06:01:43 -0700 (PDT)
I can see why Robert didn't bother with this, but thought I'd have a
go:
Jayasuriya
Atapattu
Sangakkara
Jayawardene
PA de Silva
Dias
Ranatunga
Vaas
DS de Silva
Muralitharan
Malinga
Looks a decent batting side, but clearly short on pace bowling... ...

Fri, 11 Jul 2008 18:02:29 +0100
First person ever to get out fo 199 aparently, shame he could not get
that 1 last run, love the BBC update:
>1749: WICKET - Bell c & b Harris 199, Eng 593-8 declared
>Oh no. Oh no, no, no, no, no. I never thought I would feel sorry for a
