Sean writes that parole has become a 'scandal', I fail to see why.
Judges and magistrates who pass sentence know exactly what the term
they pass in court means in terms of the actual length of time spent in
custody - and if they do not they have no right to occupy a place on a
park bench let alone a legal one.

I would say that it serves 4 main purposes
1.. It punishes those who commit crime, and serves as retribution for
victims of crime.
2.. It reforms criminal behaviour.
3.. It stands as a deterrent to crime.
4.. It prevents criminals from re-offending by keeping them locked away ...
