OT: AVG Antivirus - no longer free?

Hi guys,
I know a few people here used to use AVG antivirus.
The version I have 7.5 which no longer gets free updates as of today.
There doesn't seem to be a replacement free product from AVG, which is
fair enough.
Can anybody recommend a good alternative?
Should I just bite the bullet and pay for somet ...
