Question Regarding British Sitcoms - Number of Episodes

Here in the United States, 26 episodes of a television show are usually
produced for each season, and if a show is a hit, they try to keep it going
for as many years as possible. Why is it that some wildly popular British

If the therory of time is accurate - then doogie howser is no longer a
child doctor - he is now a adult doctor .
How about a new series about his transformation into adulthood while
showing his adventures of shagging and his alcohol addiction .
