Considering that local government is so fragmented these days would it not
be better just to go back to the pre-1970's county boundaries, regardless of
which authority controls them. So Newcastle is in Northumberland, Gateshead
is in County Durham etc, it would make things much neater!

Hi All
HMS Ark Royal is back in the Port of Tyne - returning home to the
River into which she was launched on 20 June 1981. (Swan Hunter's
Wallsend Yard).
She is presently berthed at the Nortunbria Quay (Royal Quays - North
Shields).

You would never dream of calling Yorkshire "The Mid North", naming it
as seen from London. Rather it is called by it's own name for itself
"Yorkshire". And so it should. Why not our part of the country?
I seem to remember being told at a boarding school in York in the 50s
that it did used to be called "Northumbe ...

When working in Cullercoats this morning you couldn't miss the vessels
hanging about off the Tyne entrance so out came the camera during a
break. Makes a change from cranes!
