Looking for a small probability project for my class

I teach introductory ("baby") statistics at a community college.
I'd like to have them spend less than an hour gathering data and
about 90 minutes analyzing it. Ideally there would be elements of

if I have a large series of stochastic numbers (such as from rainfall records)
and apply things such as mean an standard deviation I can find that by
subtracting one standard deviation from the average I can get a negative
number.
