Sorry to be a dunce, but I'm sure some maths whiz can solve this.
I'd really appreciate your help.
I have a value, call it X. And I know it's risen over the year by a
percentage, say Y.
How do I calculate what the original value of X is?
My attempts have been missing the mark. Your help would be ...

G'day,
marking my son's homework.
S=a+(n-1)d
he arrived at the correct answer
S-(n-1)d
however, he went further and arrived at
S+d-dn
do I mark him correct for condensing further
if not, why?

I am having problems working out this percentage problem, which I'm
sure is really very simple.
Five partners receive shares in the following splits: 15%, 15%, 15%,
