Recover files from dead 12" Powerbook

I've been asked to help recover some files from a dead 12" aluminium
Powerbook.
The Powerbook's hard disk is OK, and the battery is fine, but it can't be
charged or powered on because the battery is dead, and the charging socket
is knackered.
What's the best way to go about this?

I use my iPhone a lot whilst at work - and often in low-signal areas,
which tends to drain the battery quickly.
On a good day, I drive between several sites, so get a chance to charge
it up in the car. On a bad day, I'll be in one site all day, which kills
my battery.
Has anyone tried any of the add-on batter ...
