Always-on laptop -- advice needed

I'm thinking of keeping my ancient Dell Inspiron 7500 always on to
service my weather station. How safe is this from a fire point of view?
Is it better to run it without the battery in? (Obviously it will be
running off the mains and in its port replicator.)

In the past year I've exploded to bits my faulty ex-trusty IBM T22
laptop, ruined the original screen by attempting to change the $$ tube
(specifically mangled up the rubber isolation bits over the solder
joins), wasted $$ buying second hand inverter boards, wasted more buying
an LCD cable from china that was ...

Sorry to bother you all with this, but I thought I'd get a better idea
from this forum Does anybody know on which is the best format for
cooling pads? I bought one with fans which runs from the USB port but
was wondering if the gel pads might be better, as they're not drawing
any power from the 'put ...

(only through Rapidshare and from a legit. opera ng.), and burn them into
DVD.
So far I've felt rather frustrated with the present system (VAIO VGN-FS

I've bought a second hand Toshiba tecra M5 (it was sold as out of order)
I send it to Toshiba ASP to repair it but know Toshiba ask me 150?
($250US) to remove the boot password.
I don't find any solution on the internet cau ...
