Thunderbird - of add-on updates and dictionaries
Mon, 27 Oct 2008 11:16:31 +0000
I have the mozilla supplied version of Thunderbird and every time I get
a new update to any of my add-ons I find my English (GB) dictionary is
disabled and only my French one works. A restart of TB fixes it, but why
doesn't the English dictionary work by default following the
installation of new updates?
Does a ...

Permissions problem with copying to Samba share
Sat, 25 Oct 2008 18:09:09 +0100
I'm having a problem with accessing a Samba share on an Ubuntu server
from a Fedora workstation. The Samba share is my main repository for
music files. It's shared via Samba; both the Create Mask and Directory
Mask are set to 0777. I've set Force User as an option in the Samba
configuration, and this user owns ...

Fri, 24 Oct 2008 02:36:01 -0700 (PDT)
Hi All,
I'm getting lots of smartd errors:
smartd[3522]: Device: /dev/sda, 661 Currently unreadable (pending)
sectors
Smartctl is only reporting errors at
Error: UNC at LBA = 0x016d5880 = 23943296
Since the disk has 12 partitions, it shouldn't be much of an issue to
stop using one or two of them. But ...

What price Linux?
Thu, 23 Oct 2008 15:29:28 +0100
The Linux Foundation have tried to put a price on the development cost
of the Linux kernel and the whole of Fedora 9:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/10/22/what_is_linux_worth/
In summary, the kernel comes in at US$1.4bn and US$10.8bn for the whole
distribution.

Current laptop favourites for linux?
Sun, 19 Oct 2008 23:07:56 +0100
Wotcher all, having just had my Lenovo Z61P make a horrible grunting
sound and say "Fan error" then shut down and refuse to get past the
BIOS screen, it may be time to look at a replacement, this one's
lasted a whole year and three months! Woohoo!
So, what's a good bet these days for a high-performance laptop i ...

In praise of Windows
10 Oct 2008 19:54:28 GMT
There are only two things I like [or rather, don't vehemently hate] about
Windows: one is RDP, which is a nice WAN-compatible graphical way of
viewing applications on a remote Linux box, and having a semi-persistent
session. It's like VNC after a diet. NoMachine apparently comes close,
but is non-free so I'm y ...
