OT: data recovery
Mon, 7 Sep 2009 11:32:02 -0700 (PDT)
Forgive the deviation, folks, but assuming that Linux users are (a)
practical and (b) economical ...
A friend of mine has just rung to say that her hard drive has died.
Confirmed by local computer shop. She wants the data back badly, as it
includes all the photos from birth to date (3 y.o) of her son. No
backup ...

Is an Atom better than an Athlon XP 2400+?
Mon, 07 Sep 2009 13:31:50 +0100
I'm wanting to replace my ageing home desktop with a new small machine
that I can leave on most of the time. It's for very basic email, web,
openoffice use with the occasional light photo editing. Eventually would
like to add audio streaming.
Something like this could be ideal:

iPAQ and PNA vs. Fedora (and others?)
Sun, 6 Sep 2009 22:01:35 +0000 (UTC)
Fedora 10 seems to think that anything running Windows Mobile must, by
definition, support mobile broadband. Consequently, /var/log/messages
shows the following sequence of log messages:
kernel: usb 5-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 4
kernel: usb 5-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 ch ...

Security without upgrades
Sun, 6 Sep 2009 09:17:19 -0700 (PDT)
Ubuntu sends me "essential security upgrades" about twice a week, on
average. How secure, then, is Puppy Linux, which I love but which
hasn't been upgraded in many months? Can I trust it?

Ogg in Firefox
Fri, 4 Sep 2009 23:25:35 +0100
Recent versions of firefox always try to play ogg files (and seem to
think they are videos) even though I have *all* options set to 'Always
Ask'. Anyone know how to defeat this and regain control?

Naive debian packages questions
Fri, 4 Sep 2009 09:20:39 +0000 (UTC)
I have some very naive questions stemming from an annoying problem
with fetchmail. I just wanted to run them past this newsgroup to see
if I understood the situation correctly.
I just upgraded from debian etch to lenny (lenny is now debian stable)
and precisely one thing broke: fetchmail. My fetchmail was upgrad ...

Ubuntu and FaceBook
Thu, 3 Sep 2009 13:26:23 +0100
I'm trying to persuade my wife to use Kubuntu instead of Windoze. It's sad
I know but she plays games on FaceBook like Farm Town and some rollercoaster
thing. I chose Kubuntu because the browser therein (Konqueror) provides the
vertical scroll bar in the Farm Town store whereas FireFox does not (a known

02 Sep 2009 15:42:58 GMT
Have ubuntu 9.04 installed and wanted to rip approx 200 CDs to MP3.
Any recommendations what to use that's fast, not CLI ie has a GUI, and
produces decent quality files.
I couldn't find Sound Juicer (google search recommended) in the repos and
just tried using K3b which took 15 minutes to rip to ogg whereas, ...

capturing audio en video with Xandros eee-pc
Mon, 31 Aug 2009 01:21:46 -0700 (PDT)
I'm still trying to find out the best way to record video and audio
together with standard Xandros on my eee-pc.
I recently started experimenting with ffmpeg and found out the
recorded video is of very good quality. Unfortunately I can't figure
out how to include audio recording with ffmpeg itself. I already tried ...
