Wireless router recommendation
Tue, 12 May 2009 08:51:47 -0700 (PDT)
Dear All,
This is perhaps a wee bit off topic, but in my defence every PC I have

I need a new wireless router - my old eTec one is behaving a bit oddly
[1]. I would really like one which can also act as a DNS server as my
old eTec (Connexant chipset) could, but I haven't been able to find
tha ...

Unable to shutdown
Mon, 11 May 2009 22:46:36 +0100
I have Mandriva 2009.1 with kde 3.5.10 on an Asus PC901. It seems to be fine
except for two related problems:
1) Login does not present the usual kde logn dialog, just a white box on a
black screen headed 'Welcome to localhost and only allowing a login name.
Once that is entered and Enter pressed, a password reque ...

Recording from a sound card
Mon, 11 May 2009 12:57:47 +0100
I've just installed a new sound card which is reported as a
CMI8738-MC6 and I've disabled the onboard sound hardware in the BIOS.
I'm feeding it with sound via the optical connection; having enabled the
right switches in alsa mixer it passes the sound through to the monitor
speakers but it won't produce a signal ...

xpdf stole my soundcard
Mon, 11 May 2009 11:01:56 +0000 (UTC)
Once every few months I hit "play" on xmms and I get the moan
that it can't access my sound card. I'm using alsa drivers
and debian 4.0 with kernel 2.6.22-4-686 by the way. The reason
this happens is, I think, that all the channels have been
stolen by other programs. One quick way to find out what's going
on is ...

Configuring a networked LJ5
Tue, 19 May 2009 17:42:42 +0000 (UTC)
I've just replaced my network hub and now have enough ports to connect my
network-enabled HP Laserjet 5 as a network printer. I think I've
configured its IP address and protocols correctly and was able to set it
up as a networked printer under Fedora 8 but it won't print the test page
and isn't pingable.

Talking from C to MS-SQL
Tue, 19 May 2009 16:01:29 +0100
Does anyone have any pointers to a simple guide for hurling values into
a table, and similar SQL operations, from C (on an embedded linux box)
into a microsoft SQL server?
Ideally, just make up an SQL statement with something like
sprintf(sql_query,"INSERT INTO FOO VALUES ('%s','%s', '%s');"
,bar,quux,bletc ...
