move KDE setting directory off NFS

Hi all,
Had a bit of a google, but get the right search terms to get the answer
I'm looking for.
My home directory is mounted via NFS and of course my ~/.kde is there as
well. To improve reponsiveness I'd like to move the directory to
somewhere on my local disk. Is this possible?

I've had a quick look around google but not been able to find anything
particularly relevant.
I'm wanting to setup something like a foomatic filter to automatically
render an openoffice (odt) document for printing. This is for a
headless box essentially for handling lots of mail-merges.

Firewall/server question

I hope this isn't too far OT - the computers will be running Linux
- but the folks here seem knowledgeable.
At the moment I have a very simple network, basically just
distributing internet to three or four pcs with an old one running
smoothwall as a firewall on the back of the modem.

Directory is now a file how to change back

one of the folders on my hd after power outage is now shown as file.
Is there any command which will allow me to change it back to folder??
so something like chmod or umask. I did run e2fsck and errors were found
and corrected. OS boots up fine(centos 5.2). ...

No idea what this means!
What can I usefully do?
Apparently I can change my password and transfer files.
It'd be useful I think to run some sort of disk check.

Is there a complete package of any kind that can connect to a printer,
scanner & modem to produce a network multi-function
fax/copier/scanner/printer.
On the face of it, with a relatively cheap computer, you could end up
with a very sophisticated system at a fraction of the cost of buying
an all-in-one unit.

Using Debian Testing in 64 bit-ness here. Everything is fully up to date
and installed from packages not source. When I try to run kmail, I get:
$ kmail

GIMP creates huge GIF files

Here's a 573x573 pixel PNG image that is just 415 bytes in size:

But if I load it into the GIMP and save it in GIF format, then it becomes
50068 bytes in size. I knew that GIFs could be inefficient compared to
PNGs, but that's 120 times larger!
