Disappearing disk and filesystem
Mon, 08 Jun 2009 12:36:00 GMT
Ubuntu 8.04 system with two hard drives (sda and sdb). sda has / and
/home on it, along with swap and a couple of other bits of space left
over from a now deleted Windows XP install. sdb should have a single
large 250Gb ext3 filesystem populated mostly with media files - but

Setting default pulseaudio sink
Sat, 6 Jun 2009 01:16:29 +0100
How do you set the default sink in pulseaudio? I want to use HDMI audio
so I've added these lines to /etc/pulse/default.pa:
load-module module-alsa-sink device=hw:0,3
and
set-default-sink alsa_output.hw_0_3
but it always starts up using the analogue sink and source and I have to
change it to Digital ...

DVD rip to MPEG2 file?
Fri, 05 Jun 2009 19:04:14 GMT
Is there a tool that lets you select a track on a DVD and simply extracts
it from the DVD to a PC in its native MPEG2 format without transcoding it?
The reason I ask is that I've got a number of DVD-Rs that were created by
my DVD-recorder in standard DVD format, with the videos encoded into the
usual vob files, ...

cdrecord and multiple copies of same file
Mon, 01 Jun 2009 07:03:39 -0500
For a perfectly good reason, I tried to make an audio CD with several
identical tracks using the same .WAV file name repeated on the command
line
cdrecord [switches] file.wav file.wav file.wav file.wav file.wav file.wav
It appeared to work, writing the requested number of copies to CD, but
the resulting CD ...

3 Mobile Broadband and Linux
Sun, 31 May 2009 04:11:20 -0700 (PDT)
3 are giving away mobile broadband dongles for postage (¡ê5) at the
moment, through www.3dongles4free.co.uk. I acquired one on the what-
the-hell principle and then started trying to get it to work with
Ubuntu. The canonical solutions seems to involve installing usb-
modeswitch and zte-mf627-switch, but having done ...

Upgrading Ubuntu broke X
Sun, 31 May 2009 02:02:24 -0700 (PDT)
Hi
Tried to upgrade Ubuntu from (I think) 8.04 to 8.10 and it broke X. Or
it might have broken lots of things, but until X is fixed I don 't
know how bad the damage is.The upgrade went as far as 'restart' then I
got half the screen with "distribution upgrade" running in the bottom
bar and things froze.
GRUB ...

Is anybody else having problems loading Slashdot stories, eg:
http://it.slashdot.org/story/09/05/27/1547248/Testing-So-Called-Unified-
Threat-Managers
I'm just getting connection reset by peer. slashdot.org and it.slashdot.org
load fine. It appears to only be stories that won't load. I've posted in my

Thu, 28 May 2009 09:28:21 +0100

IceWM + KDE4 on Debian/Ubuntu = ?
Wed, 27 May 2009 20:16:05 +0100
I seem to have the same problem with one machine on Intrepid and another on
Squeeze: very few KDE4 apps show up in IceWM's menus, for example on the
Debian one only kTorrent is there. Has the format of KDE's menus changed for
this version?
