Hp-150 Keyboard problems
Sun, 21 Jun 2009 16:53:53 +0000 (UTC)
Hi,
Me again.
I've been having keyboard problems, specifically that my HP-150 running
Ubuntu 8.04 is treating the "fn" key as being permanently pressed; which
means that some keys are treated as numbers.
I've discovered that it appears to be a software problem, not hardware as
I suspected - since it doe ...

Print Server
Sat, 20 Jun 2009 05:14:32 -0700 (PDT)
At the moment I use my ADSL modem/router's built in print server
capability for sharing my printer. It's a Draytek Vigor 2600 and the
printer simply plugs into a USB port. Printing only ever has been
needed from my Windows boxes and it was a case of configuring those to
print to a TCP/IP port. I didn't have muc ...

Problem with Fedora 11 as client in VBox
Sat, 20 Jun 2009 11:41:13 +0100
I've successfully installed F11 (KDE version) in VBox on a Mac, but I'm
struggling with the Guest Additions.
The problems seem to stem from having a version mismatch in the kernel
and kernel headers. The default kernel is 2.6.29.4-167, but then
installing dkms (as required) pulls down the PAE-devel kernel as ...

Online data storage
Thu, 18 Jun 2009 11:23:10 GMT
Somewhat OT...
I am looking for a cheap solution for personal (i.e. non-business) online
storage, mostly to mirror my code base (as a kind of repository), also
for backups. My needs are pretty modest, < 10Gb, and I would really like
to be able to use rsync (being the devil I know) for the mirroring
aspect. ...

vanilla linux-friendly graphics cards?
18 Jun 2009 10:48:32 GMT
Any suggestions for cheap graphics cards that play well with Linux (in
the sense of not requiring closed-source, possibly buggy drivers, for
example). Needs to do up to 1280x1024 24-bit colour but no fancy 3-D games
or anything like that.
Needs to fit a standard PCI slot or there's a longer slot the
now-defunct ...

HP-150 laptop keyboard problems
Thu, 18 Jun 2009 10:18:21 +0000 (UTC)
Hi,
Bit of a weird one this: the HP-150 laptop I run Ubuntu 8.10 on has a
"function" key, which enables an alternate numeric keypad on top of the
existing one, so, for example, pressing "uio" with the function key
pressed will generate 456.
The problem is that my laptop appears to have a hardware problem w ...

OOo calc offset() function broken in OOo2.4.1?
17 Jun 2009 11:42:15 GMT
I have a spreadsheet I use for following bank accounts. Each row has
columns for amount_in, amount_out and balance. The balance row contains a
formula to take the offset of its own cell address -1 row (to get the
previous row's balance) + amount_in - amount_out.
e.g. OFFSET(F94;-1,0)+D94-E94
This used to work ...

nut - /etc/killpower not being created.
Mon, 15 Jun 2009 22:07:41 +0000 (UTC)
For the first time in a very long time I've actually had a powercut
today long enough for the UPS battery to go low and the machines to
shutdown.
Unfortunately, (or fortunately) the power came back on within a minute
or two of them shutting down and they didn't reboot.
Ah, I thought. Probably set in the bios ...
