sound advice needed
Thu, 06 Aug 2009 19:21:22 +0100
(In both senses :-) )
As a bit of a newbie to ubuntu, I'm in a quandry about the best way to
proceed in porting some perl scripts from XP to ubuntu.
The perl scripts are running under XP, one of which needs to play back
midi files (play, and stop being needed), while the other plays back wav
files (ne ...

Black mouse cursor
Wed, 05 Aug 2009 10:24:44 +0100
I run Debian with Gnome. My mouse cursor is white, just how I like
it. Recently I needed to install some KDE libraries for an application
(KDE 4 I suspect), but as a side effect it changed my mouse cursor
from white to black. Unfortunately removing the KDE application and
(all?) the KDE libraries didn't give me ba ...

Wireless Routers
Wed, 05 Aug 2009 09:17:17 +0100
Although I am (generally) happy with Linksys wireless routers, they have a
feature that is annoying. We have been experiencing power-outs here in my
part of the world; which cause the wireless routers to power off but not
power back on when power is restored. Can anyone recommend an alternative?

Quick, silent bootup - longish!
Sun, 2 Aug 2009 19:35:15 +0100
First some explanation so you know where I'm coming from :)
I have an AMD Geode LX-800 (running at 500MHz) and have made a minimum
debian lenny install.
I did this by using the net install iso and when prompted for what
system to install simply unchecked the default entries 'desktop' and
'standard'.
I then ...

Security using VMs
Sun, 02 Aug 2009 09:26:16 +0100
I recently read this article about providing additional security through
the use of VMs: http://tiny.cc/wTzzu [Tom's Hardware].
I'm pondering doing something similar on both my machine (running
Fedora) and the wife's machine running Vista.
Speed of booting of the VM is important; also some consideration may ...

Any mail client as good as OUTLOOK EXPRESS for dialup?
Thu, 30 Jul 2009 14:00:01 +0000 (UTC)
The only windows client I'm familiar with is Outlook Express,
though I didn't fully appreciate its features until I went
looking for something similar to use under Linux.
I've looked at Thunderbird, Claws, and Opera mail, but these
seem seriously lacking in some features essential for convenient
*dial-up* inter ...

Detecting whether to use su or sudo
Thu, 30 Jul 2009 13:42:31 +0100
Is there a reliable way for a script or program to detect whether it
should use su or sudo to run a child process with root privileges? All I
could find on Google was something that detects whether su is available,
but I don't think that's good enough because it can be installed on a
system which should use sudo.
