Thunderbird 3 - headers panel ridiculously large
Mon, 17 Aug 2009 09:51:13 +0100
The last Fedora 11 update upgraded Thunderbird to v3-beta-3 and the
message header panel (in between the mailbox list and the message body
in the classic view) has grown stupidly large. A couple of versions ago,
it was a sensible size - i.e., taking up the minimum space necessary.
But then it grew and wasted a ...

Screen res problems in Lenny
Mon, 17 Aug 2009 00:18:52 +0100
Just installed Debian Lenny on a new HD alongside Etch. For reasons I
won't bore you with I want to resurrect an old machine to boot my legacy
copy of Win 98 and, being pushed for desk space, I bought a display
switcher to switch the monitor between the 2 machines.
Trouble is if I boot Lenny with the switcher in ...

run on the laptop is ISE webpack. The documentation refers to Red Hat
Enterprise WS 4.0, Red Hat Enterprise Desktop 5.0 or SUSE Enterprise 10.
Currently I am using fedora 8 which is working fine. The usual
recommendation is to use the lat ...

Hi
I've just got hold of my first laptop which has a Core 2 Duo processor,
with the intention of loading it with Centos 5.3 64bit. I presently use
Centos on a couple of DTs.
After a quick perusal of the handbook, many of the features, power
control, battery monitoring etc, mention Win**** !! which has set ...

Fedora 11 problem?
Wed, 12 Aug 2009 22:46:07 +0000 (UTC)
I suspect there a malware issue with F11. Here's the story:
Yesterday I downloaded a DVD image for F11 and today I installed it on a
brand new, never used WD Caviar SE disk. All went well except that after
the reboot and I opened a terminal window a knocking started as though
the disk was hitting its stops ev ...

Dual boot question
Sun, 09 Aug 2009 23:22:47 +0100
Hi All,
I've recently installed Linux on a second hard drive in a Dell 4600
running WinXP. As it's set up, Windows is on the primary drive and
Linux the secondary (although I may reverse this..!) so if I want to
boot Windows I do nothing but if I want to start Linux I have to
remember to press F12 to bring u ...

smartd question
Fri, 7 Aug 2009 11:20:57 +0000 (UTC)
For the last day or two I've been seeing the following in the smartd
section of logwatch:
Offline uncorrectable sectors detected:
/dev/sda - 1 Time(s)
1 offline uncorrectable sectors detected
though the error count varies. However, running a health check via
smartctl gave a pass.
Then I ...

sound advice needed
Thu, 06 Aug 2009 19:21:22 +0100
(In both senses :-) )
As a bit of a newbie to ubuntu, I'm in a quandry about the best way to
proceed in porting some perl scripts from XP to ubuntu.
The perl scripts are running under XP, one of which needs to play back
midi files (play, and stop being needed), while the other plays back wav
files (ne ...

Black mouse cursor
Wed, 05 Aug 2009 10:24:44 +0100
I run Debian with Gnome. My mouse cursor is white, just how I like
it. Recently I needed to install some KDE libraries for an application
(KDE 4 I suspect), but as a side effect it changed my mouse cursor
from white to black. Unfortunately removing the KDE application and
(all?) the KDE libraries didn't give me ba ...
