Difficulty Copying CDs

I have problems coping data CDs on two machines running XP SP-2.
I have never been able to copy a CD or DVD on either machine.
Either there are errors which abort the process (using Nero 6) or,
on the other machine, the trial programme I'm using keeps asking for
a blank destination disc, even though ...
