Sat, 7 Nov 2009 13:36:12 -0000
Anyone with a T5500 or T5450 notebook can post there Windows 7 WEI score?,
its just for comparison with my new PDC 1.3ghz ULV machine as I used to own
a T5450/5500 machine and under Vista and it scored 4.7 for CPU. I would like
to know what that CPU would score under Windows 7.

Sat, 7 Nov 2009 09:33:48 -0000
Some people were curious about the outcome of my efforts to run a vintage
ST-225 HD on my relatively modern (1998) motherboard (MS-6119), with an 8
bit controller card (WD1002A0WX1).
I'm working totally with DOS. All IDE set to "not intalled" in my system
BIOS. Floppy disk connected.

Is "FF" unwritten ROM space?
Fri, 6 Nov 2009 15:09:32 -0000
Just checking for certainty. I've run a program that reads a section of ROM
in my PC. I looked at the file produced by the program I used, and it
indicated the bytes there as FF for the whole area of ROM that a reading was
taken of. In asci, a capital Y with two dots above. Does FF mean that this
ROM area is ...

I give up, how do I find a PC support company for friends?
Fri, 06 Nov 2009 14:50:31 +0000
This week I have had 5 calls from very non-technical stay-at-home folks
wanting their XP PCs sorted out.
Due to commitments I'm not able to jump around and help them through
some really silly problems (like updating AV software, install their
broadband, etc...) and hold their hands explaining basic things for ...

Self starting pc problem
Fri, 06 Nov 2009 09:50:09 GMT
Because I hate those power bricks that stay live even when the equipment is
off, I have put pc, DVD,TV, modem, router etc on one switched extension, and
turn it off at night. Convenient.
Even though I do a normal legal Windows shut down at night, before turning
the power off, the pc starts itself up as soon a ...

Need a screw...
Thu, 05 Nov 2009 15:58:33 +0000
(Ahem).
I can't find a source for the fine-thread, cheese-head torx screw which
is often used to mount HDD, DVD and floppy drives in cases where you
release a clip to slide them out. Google has let me down, as has Ebay.
Any ideas? I don't even know what to call them.

FreeNAS on old microATX and ACPI
Wed, 4 Nov 2009 15:46:27 -0000
I've just built myself a NAS box using FreeNAS and i'm in the midst of
testing reliability for myself to see if it's worthwhile in the longer term.
I've built it using an old micro ATX board i've had lying around for years
and a couple of old 20Gb hard drives. I'm testing various configurations
and services ( ...
