Multiple instances of VIA IDE controller in XP Device Manager

Following on from my desperate article in uk.adverts.computer, where I
asked if anyone had a PATA hard disk as mine has failed in my main PC.

also,sata II have latch tab on the end whereas sata has the push in fall
back out connectors

Free Nero CD / DVD burn software

I notice Nero are now offering free Nero 9 Lite CD / DVD burning software,
link below.

It forces you to install an Ask/Nero web browser search toolbar add-in but
that can be removed in Add/Remove progs. after install.
Anyone else tried it, any comments? ...

Random Lockups

Since Saturday, my PC has been suffering random lock ups.
Win Vista 64, no problems at all with it previously, the only things
that I've changed recently were an updated driver for my Logitech G15
keyboard and AVG free was upgraded from 8 to 9. Both in the last 3 days.
I get no error message, no blue screen ...

Damned AVG toolbar

I've been out of the loop for a while now and haven't built a machine
from scratch for 4 or 5 years, so I'm a bit out of touch with the best
processor and motherboard options.

Not. It's resetting the heads after every track read failure. Sounds
like every single track read is failing, so what you have there is
just an entertaining doorstop.

GA-EP41-UD3L single versus double sided memory

Just bought a Gigabyte GA-EP41-UD3L motherboard which has four memory slots.
The manual and website says "Up to 8GB of RAM". So we've bought 4 x 2GB
crucial memory:

So you manage to get it running again, like all young kids I suppose
she has loaded Bear Share and all that other music downloading crap,
toolbars etc. When you run msconfig, HiJack this and see that
basically its a bloody mess would this be another approach to trying
to sort it all out:
