changing the color of an animated mask surrounding area

Whenever I make an animated mask, the surrounding area around the mask that
reveals the underlying layers is always white.
Is there a way to make the surrounding area black or any colour other than
white?
In action, it would look better in some scenes to have the surrounding area
another colour than white for ...

I was working on a tutorial about using photos in Flash and making a bitmap
trace from them. It mentioned how when the bitmap trace was done and one had
a greyscale vector image to work with, the image could be given new color
schemes by using the paintbucket and the color mixer.
I can't figure out how to apply ...

I don't want to go hell for level with advanced xml integration and all
that, all I want to do is try and re-create YouTube's 5 picture 'shuffle'
that they use for their 'videos currently being watched' bit.

How can I hand over flashvars without HTML?

I have a *.fla file using flashvars, which are needed to work properly.
The problem is, that I don't know how to hand them over to the flashplayer
when the movie is not embedded in a webpage.
And especially: Is it possible to hand over flashvars, when testing a movie?
(without publishing)
